COURSE OVERVIEW

Prepares rescue personnel to operate watercraft and perform rescues using boats as a primary rescue platform in both moving and urban water environments. Students develop proficiency in boat selection, outfitting, handling, and maneuvering, along with rescue techniques, emergency procedures, and moving-water tactics. The program meets or exceeds Technician-Level guidelines outlined in NFPA 1670 and emphasizes safe, controlled operations in high-risk environments.

PROGRAM OPTIONS


BASIC BOAT FAMILIARIZATION & OPERATIONS

Introduce students to the setup, handling, and operation of inflatable rescue boats. Students learn essential skills including maneuvering, launching, maintenance, and crew responsibilities in controlled water environments.

This training session is NOT intended to provide the student with emergency search and rescue operations skills or emergency responder survival skills.

EMERGENCY BOAT OPERATIONS & RESCUE

Prepare responders to operate boats as rescue platforms in dynamic environments, including moving water and urban flooding conditions. Training focuses on advanced boat handling, rescue techniques, emergency procedures, and safe operations aligned with NFPA 1670 technician-level guidelines.

This program meets or exceeds NFPA 1670 Standards on Operations and Training for Technical Rescue Incidents – Technician-level guidelines for Water Rescue.

SKILL MODULES

All individual skill modules can be delivered as stand-alone training sessions, giving departments the flexibility to tailor training to their specific operational needs, staffing levels, and scheduling constraints. Whether used to reinforce core competencies, address identified gaps, or provide focused skill development, each module can be scheduled independently and delivered on-site to align with your department’s availability and training objectives.

COURSE CONSIDERATIONS

The Agency Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) is responsible to ensure that their members are trained and equipment to handle emergencies and incidents within their scope of responsibility. The AHJ is ultimately responsible to ensure that their agency meets NFPA 1006, NFPA 1670 and any other related or relevant standard, guideline or rule.

It is highly recommended that the customer consider requiring their members to have Swiftwater Rescue Technician-level prior to operating a water rescue boat. It is highly recommended that the customer consider requiring their members to obtain a Boater’s Safety Certificate prior to operating a water rescue boat.

During the boat operation skills session, all students will be required to wear an approved PFD and water rescue helmet.
