COURSE OVERVIEW

This course provides responders with the knowledge and hands-on skills required to safely operate at trench rescue incidents. Students learn trench hazard recognition, soil classification, protective systems, shoring operations, victim access, scene management, and rescue techniques while applying industry standards, best practices, and equipment recommendations. Practical training is guided by Job Performance Requirements (JPRs), with students demonstrating competency in critical trench rescue skills and operations.

The program is designed to meet applicable trench rescue training requirements outlined in National Fire Protection Association standards, including relevant technician-level competencies found within NFPA 1006 and NFPA 1670.

PROGRAM OPTIONS


TRENCH RESCUE AWARENESS

3-4 Hours

Provides responders with a foundational understanding of trench rescue hazards, collapse indicators, responder safety, and operational limitations. Students learn to recognize trench emergencies and support safe incident operations.

TRENCH RESCUE OPERATIONS

16 - 20 Hours

Designed for personnel who have completed Awareness-level training, this program develops the skills needed to safely operate at trench rescue incidents. Students learn hazard assessment, trench entry procedures, protective systems, victim location, and extrication techniques.

TRENCH RESCUE TECHNICIAN

16 - 20 Hours

This advanced program prepares rescuers for complex trench rescue incidents involving deep and intersecting trenches. Students develop technician-level skills in advanced shoring, rescue operations, and incident management.

SKILL MODULES

All individual skill modules can be delivered as stand-alone training sessions, giving departments the flexibility to tailor training to their specific operational needs, staffing levels, and scheduling constraints. Whether used to reinforce core competencies, address identified gaps, or provide focused skill development, each module can be scheduled independently and delivered on-site to align with your department’s availability and training objectives.
